Hey Sid! Congratulations on winning Wishes! How does it feel?
Hi! It feels unbelievable. Like literally, I still can't believe it. When I saw the announcement Quip, I just stared at my screen for a solid minute and then started tearing up (embarrassing, but true!). I never thought that I would win, and I'm so incredibly flattered and honored to be a part of DE!
That's so sweet! All that hard work definitely paid off and it was well deserved, especially with your finale entry. What was your favorite thing about the comp?
Ooh, that's a tough one! This competition was a wonderful experience all around! The contestants, the super supportive atmosphere, the organization--everything impressed me! But I think my favorite thing about this competition was the learning experience. The rounds really encouraged me (and most of us, I think) to go outside my comfort zone and try things that I never would have before. I had never really tried harmonizing before this competition, and now I feel really comfortable with it. So I'm very grateful to DEWishes for helping me grow as a singer.
Aww thanks! We really tried to challenge you guys and come up with unique themes for each round. Even though the duet one kinda flopped haha. On the flip side, what was the most difficult thing about the comp?
The Era round, hands down. My group got assigned the "Bronze Era," AKA the Dark Ages of Disney. And it was called that because literally every movie produced during that era was a failure except "The Rescuers." I had never seen any of those movies before, and after doing my research, I found out that all the songs sounded SUPER 70s. Which.... yeah, nobody wants to hear that. I was feeling pretty discouraged that round, when I stumbled across "Someone's Waiting for You." I fell in love with that song and with Penny, so I decided to roll with it, and things started going uphill from there!
Really? I'm surprised. I thought you would've said the Language Round. A lot of people seemed to be really stressed about that one
That one was stressful too, but at least we had a much wider song selection. I was really impressed with how everyone did that round though, considering how much people were struggling! Although I will admit, I thought I was going to get eliminated after the language round. I wasn't very confident in that entry.
But hey you made it through and won the whole thing! Aside from the mashups, that was probably our favorite round even though we were pretty sure you guys hated us for it haha. So the prize was a membership into DE as the character of your choice. Why did you pick Boo from Monsters Inc. out of all of the available characters?
I know a lot of people might think that was a weird choice considering she only ever says 3 words, but Boo has always been a favorite of mine. She's just so cute and adventurous and loveable. But she definitely also has a sassy side (we all remember how she knocks out the entire city's power when she cries and then laughs when Mike gets poked in the eye). So I relate to her in a lot of ways, and I dressed up as her for Halloween once. Also, as you might have noticed in a couple of my entries, I'm not too bad at doing little kid voices, so I figured I could pull the Boo voice off.
Well you're right about the little kid voices. They added just the extra nudge in your Era entry to get you to the Top 5 of that round. So this is just the beginning of Wishes and we're already thinking about a second season. Any advice to the future competitors?
I'm so glad you're going to continue Wishes! I know a lot of people (myself included) are already looking forward to next season. And as far as my advice... Hmm... I guess I'd just emphasize that creativity is super important in this competition, because I think DE really wants to see YOU coming across in your entries. So even if you think your entry is perfect vocally, always try to add a little extra flair of uniqueness that helps it stand out! And be sure to give yourself enough time for the entries, especially on the later rounds! I always tried to start planning the day the rounds were announced if I could.
Oh yeah definitely don't put your entry to the last minute. We saw that a looot and it was nerve wracking to watch you guys panic about submitting on time. Congratulations again Sidney on winning the competition!
Thank you so much! And thanks again for choosing me to be a part of DE! I'm excited to get started.
